18. Stay away from hypocrites and despise vulgarians.

孔子何以惡鄉願①，隻為他似忠似廉，無非假麵孔②；孔子何以棄鄙夫③，隻因他患得患失，盡是俗心腸④。

【中文注釋】

① 惡鄉願：惡，討厭、厭惡；鄉願，貌似忠誠老實、實質欺世盜名的人。

② 假麵孔：偽善的嘴臉；具有欺騙性。

③ 棄鄙夫：棄，厭棄，瞧不起；鄙夫，小人。

④ 俗心腸：此處指唯利是圖者。

【今文解譯】

孔子為什麼厭惡偽君子？就是因為他們看似忠厚老實，其實是一副虛假偽善的嘴臉。

孔子為什麼鄙視世俗小人？就是因為他們太患得患失，全然是一副唯利是圖的心腸。

【English Translation】

The reason why Confucius disliked the ones seemingly honest and upright is that they are hypocritical and deceitful.

The reason why Confucius despised the mean fellows is that they are the vulgarians who only care about their own interests.
