五五、崇儉養廉 守拙全真

55. Frugality makes honesty and dullness brings sincerity.

奢者富而不足，何如儉者貧而有餘？能者勞而府怨①，何如拙者逸而全真②？

【注 釋】

① 勞而府怨：一邊辛勞地付出一邊卻又牢騷滿腹，怨恨不已。府，聚集之處。怨，怨恨。

② 逸而全真：安逸而又不失真性情。

【今文解譯】

生活追求奢華的人，對已經獲得的財富仍然不知滿足，這樣的人怎比得上那些雖然貧窮但卻因為節儉而有盈餘的人呢？

有能耐的人一邊埋頭幹活一邊卻牢騷滿腹，怨恨不已，這樣的人怎比得上那些雖然笨拙但卻悠閑而不失真性情的人呢？

【English Translation】

A man lapped in luxury and extravagance always feels dissatisfied though he is rich enough. Would it be better for him to be like that than to be a frugal man who is poor, and yet surplus?

A gifted man often stores up complaints in his heart while working hard. Would it be better for him to be like that than to be a dull man who is incapable, and yet sincere and leisurely-minded?
