五二、施之不求 求之無功

52. Never seek return for the benefaction we have given, otherwise winning no reputation.

施恩者，內不見己，外不見人，則鬥粟①可當萬鐘②之惠；利物者③，計己之施，責人之報，雖百鎰④難成一文之功。

【注 釋】

① 鬥粟：鬥，十升，約合15公斤；粟，穀子。鬥粟形容極少。

② 萬鐘：鐘，古代量器，六石四鬥為一鐘，約合250升。萬鐘表示極多。

③ 利物者：以財物幫助別人的人。

④ 百鎰：古代重量單位，一鎰為二十四兩。百鎰喻重或多。

【今文解譯】

有恩於人，施恩者自己不能老記在心裏，更不能四處宣揚；如此，即使一鬥粟的恩惠也抵得上萬鬥重的恩澤。

一個資助過別人的人，老在盤算自己的付出並期待別人有所回報，這樣的資助即使價值萬金也無一文之功德。

【English Translation】

A true benefactor should neither bear in mind nor give publicity to the good turns he has done to others. Thus, a wee bit of alms will result in boundless gratitude. But if a donator harps on the largess he has given to others and seeks for return, then his merits will not be worth a cent even though he has spent millions of gold to help.
