三四、偏見害人 聰明障道

34. Self-willedness harms man’s notion, and smart aleck hinders man’s virtue.

利欲未盡害心，意見①乃害心之蟊賊②；聲色未必障道，聰明乃障道之藩屏③。

【注 釋】

① 意見：此處指剛愎自用或自以為是。

② 蟊賊：專吃禾苗的兩種害蟲。《詩·小雅·大田》：“及其蟊賊。”傳:“食根曰蟊，食節曰賊。”此處喻禍害或禍端。

③ 藩屏：籬笆和屏風。比喻障礙。

【今文解譯】

名利欲望未必能傷害人的心智，真正傷害心智的是“剛愎自用”這個蟊賊。

聲色犬馬未必能妨礙人的德行，真正妨礙德行的是“自作聰明”這種毛病。

【English Translation】

Material desires may not necessarily do harm onto man’s notion, but self-willedness, by acting like a pest, will do.

Sensual pleasures may not necessarily hinder man’s virtue, but smart aleck, by acting like an obstacle, will do.
