一七、忍讓為高 利人利己

17. Forbearance means superiority and is beneficial to both others and yourself.

處世讓一步為高，退步即進步的張本①；待人寬一分是福，利人實利己的根基。

① 張本：為事態發展預先所作的安排。

【今文解譯】

處世忍讓是品德高尚的表現，後退一步是為了更進一步。

待人寬厚一些會給自己帶來福祉，利人也即利己的根本。

【English Translation】

To make a concession to others in social intercourse is a sign of wit where lies a flight of anticipatory stairs, from which more progress can be made in the future.

To be tolerant towards others is a sort of felicity where lies the foundation of social courtesy, on which things can be done to benefit both others and yourself.
