67. Vice concealed is more harmful than that revealed, but benevolence known by all inferior to that known to none.
為惡而畏人知,惡中猶有善路;為善而急人知,善處即是惡根。
【今文解譯】
做了壞事但怕人知道,這是良知尚未泯滅、雖惡猶善的表現。
做了好事卻急於示人,這是為善動機不純、沽名釣譽的行為。
【English Translation】
If one has done evil and is afraid of being found out, it can be understood that, in spite of his wickedness, he still entertains a clear conscience to return to the right track.
If one has done good and is anxious to make it known to others, it can be understood that, amidst his benevolence, there lies a seminary of vice.
