64. Uproot the lust for fame within and dispose of influences without.
名根未拔①者,縱輕千乘②甘一瓢③,總墮塵情;客氣④未融者,雖澤四海利萬世,終為剩技。
【注 釋】
① 名根未拔:心裏依舊懷著追求名聲的欲望。
② 千乘:也即千乘之國,指古代擁有戰車千乘的國家。此處喻巨大財富。
③ 一瓢:一瓢清水。常喻清貧、淡泊之意。
④ 客氣:此處喻指來自外界的不良影響。
【今文解譯】
名利心沒有祛除幹淨的人,縱能蔑視一國之富而甘受一瓢之清貧,說到底也還是名利心在作怪。
不能抵擋外界不良影響的人,雖能慷慨解囊,利澤四海,惠及萬代,最終還是處世的小伎倆而已。
【English Translation】
If a person has not yet uprooted the lust for fame from within, he will remain frail in the long run even though he himself claims to despise riches and rank and be willing to live a scanty life.
If a person cannot stem the torrent of the harmful influences from without, his benefaction will consequently become an uncalled-for trick even though he has done a lot to benefit both the world and the generations of all coming ages.
