三二、登高思危 少言勿躁

32. Think of danger when ascending a height and talk less to avoid vexation.

居卑①而後知登高之為危；處晦而後知向明之太靄②；守靜而後知好動之過勞；養默而後知多言之為躁。

① 卑：低處或地位低下。

② 靄：雲氣。此處可理解為“晃眼”或“顯眼”等。

【今文解譯】

到了低矮的地方才知道攀高登頂是那麼的危險。

身處晦暗的地方才知道亮光底下是那麼的紮眼。

安靜下來了才知道四處奔波是那麼的辛苦。

習慣沉默了才知道多嘴多舌是那麼的浮躁。

【English Translation】

Only when a person comes to a low place can he realize the danger of ascending a height.

Only when a person is placed in obscurity can he realize that the things in brightness are too dazzling.

Only when a person knows how to live in peace can he realize the hardship to toil and moil.

Only when a person knows how to keep silence can he realize that overtalking is the root of vexation.
