18. To let others own up to their faults is better than to censure the faulty for their wrong doings.

良心在夜氣清明之候，真情在簞食豆羹之間。故以我索人，不如使人自反；以我攻人，不如使人自露。

【今文解譯】

一如良心發現於深夜的清醒時刻，真情流露於解人饑渴的粗茶淡飯。與其我去要求別人怎麼做，不如讓他們反躬自省；與其我去抨擊別人的不是，不如讓他們自己承認錯誤。

【English Translation】

Just as a good conscience is discovered in the sobriety of night, so true feelings are perceived the moment a simple meal or a plain tea is served. That’s why we say that to make others willingly conduct self-examination is better than to simply instruct them how to behave themselves, and to let others own up to their faults is better than to censure the faulty for their wrong doings.
