44. Do away with fame when striving for virtue and be wholly devoted when resolving upon study.
學者①要收拾精神,並歸一路。如修德而留意於事功名譽,必無實詣②;讀書而寄興於吟詠風雅,定不深心。

為學者修身治學貴在全神貫注,心無旁騖:如果一邊修身一邊卻又惦記著事功名譽,就很難取得實實在在的成效;如果一邊讀書一邊卻又耽於吟詠風雅,就一定沉不下心來刻苦鑽研。
【English Translation】
One who persuades virtue and knowledge should be of concentration and wholeheartedness. If he cares too much about success and honor while undertaking self-refinement, there would be no real attainment. And by the same token, if he is too interested in chant and elegance while learning, there would be no whole devotion.
