四四、修德忘名 讀書深心

44. Do away with fame when striving for virtue and be wholly devoted when resolving upon study.

學者①要收拾精神，並歸一路。如修德而留意於事功名譽，必無實詣②；讀書而寄興於吟詠風雅，定不深心。

【注 釋】

① 學者：做學問的人。

② 實詣：實實在在的造詣。

【今文解譯】

為學者修身治學貴在全神貫注，心無旁騖：如果一邊修身一邊卻又惦記著事功名譽，就很難取得實實在在的成效；如果一邊讀書一邊卻又耽於吟詠風雅，就一定沉不下心來刻苦鑽研。

【English Translation】

One who persuades virtue and knowledge should be of concentration and wholeheartedness. If he cares too much about success and honor while undertaking self-refinement, there would be no real attainment. And by the same token, if he is too interested in chant and elegance while learning, there would be no whole devotion.
